What it is
One machine cuts it, grinds it and leaves it
A mulching head on a track machine cuts standing brush and small trees and grinds them into chips in one pass. The chips drop where the brush stood and stay there as a mat. There is no pile to burn, no stumps pulled, and nothing loaded onto a truck and hauled away.

When mulching is the right call
- You want the ground left usable, not bare dirt.
- Burning isn’t practical or isn’t allowed where you are.
- It’s on a slope where bare dirt would wash away.
- You’re opening up trails, a camp lot or a fence line.
Mulching or clearing
Which one do you actually need
People use both words for the same job, and they are not the same job. The difference is what you are left standing on when we drive out.
Forestry mulching
Brush and stems up to about six inches ground in place. Stumps stay in the ground. You are left with a chip mat over undisturbed soil, so nothing washes and you can walk or drive it right away.
Trails, camp lots, fence lines, overgrown acreage, slopes
Land and lot clearing
Trees dropped, brush cleared and the stumps dug out with the excavator. The wood is hauled off or buried on the property and the lot gets rough graded so water runs off it.
Building lots, anywhere the stumps have to come out
If you are putting a building on it, you want clearing. If you want the land back and usable without tearing the ground up, mulching does it faster and cheaper. If it is an old field rather than woods, see field reclaim. If you are not sure which, that is what the walk-through is for.
What it costs
What moves the number
Nobody can price mulching off a phone call, and anyone who does is guessing. Two properties that are both “about three acres of brush” can be a day apart in machine time. Here is what we are actually looking at when we walk it.
How thick it is
Scattered brush across a field goes several times faster than a solid wall of stems you cannot see through. Density matters more than acreage.
How big the wood is
Anything up to about six inches at the stump goes through the head. Bigger than that has to be cut down and pulled out with the excavator, which is a different job on the same ground.
What is growing there
Autumn olive and multiflora rose are slow, stringy work compared with soft young saplings. Around here you usually get some of both.
Slope and footing
A machine works slower sidehill than it does on the flat. Wet ground slows it more, which is why frozen ground is often the cheapest time to do this.
Getting in and out
The machines come in on our own lowboy. If there is somewhere to unload near the work, that is time nobody pays for.
How clean you want it
Knocking a field back so a brush hog can keep up with it is not the same as taking a lot down to a finished look. Tell us which one you are after.
We come out and look at it before we give you a number, and the number comes before any machine comes off the trailer. The walk-through doesn’t cost anything.

What people ask first
How big a tree can you mulch?
About six inches across at the stump. Anything bigger we cut down and pull out with the excavator.
Does the mulch need to be raked off?
No. It holds the soil on a slope and rots down over a season or two. If you’re seeding, we’ll thin it where you want to plant.
When is the best time of year?
Late fall through early spring, when the ground is firm and the leaves are down. Summer works fine if the ground is dry.
Do the stumps come out?
Not with mulching. The stumps stay in the ground, which is what keeps the soil from washing. If you need them out, that is land clearing and we do that too.
Will the brush grow back?
Some of it will, the first season. Autumn olive and multiflora rose both come back from the stump. The difference is that it comes back as something a brush hog can cut.
How far ahead do I need to book?
Book early. The schedule fills up a long way out. Tell us the date you need to hit and we’ll tell you straight whether we can make it.
